Character

Name: Jude Duarte
Canon: Folk of the Air Series by Holly Black
Canon point: Just after Book 2: The Wicked King
Age: 17

History: A short synopsis.

...and a much, much longer one.

Personality:
Ambitious: Being powerless has a way of making you crave the upper hand, and Jude has felt powerless most of her life. Having clawed and schemed her way up to an influential position in the Court, she’s found that she really, really likes power, and will go to great lengths to try and hold on to it. Regardless of what happens next, she is no longer going to be content being an ordinary little nobody. She doesn’t necessarily care for recognition -- but she does want to be in control.

Adaptable: Jude is very good at working with the tools she has. In Faerie, those tools were mainly comprised of the ability to lie (which the fey do not possess), her ability to blend in with the servants, and her willingness to work harder than almost everyone else around her. That said, no matter how desperate the situation, she’s usually able to quickly identify a way forward, or at least a way to keep herself from dying. She thinks on her feet and does not dwell on losses -- she just keeps moving instead. (Part of this is a self-defense mechanism: she’s not reflective because reflecting on all the crappy things in her past is depressing and traumatic.)

Deceptive: She started her career in the court as a spy, but even before that, Jude had been decent at bluffing, manipulation, and outright lying. Since becoming involved in court politics, however, this tendency has been nurtured greatly: she keeps scores of secrets from pretty much everyone in her life, and lies even to those closest to her. On one hand, it’s necessary -- sometimes to protect them, sometimes to protect herself, sometimes both. On the other hand, she’s really comfortable with lying to everyone all the time and trusting no one with her secrets, and that lends itself to a pretty lonely existence.

Intense: Word of God describes her as someone who’s great in a crisis, but not so good in regular life. She has spent more than half her life trying to survive in a hostile, treacherous environment, all the while learning strategy from one of the more bloodthirsty fey in the High King’s retinue. As a result, Jude doesn’t really know how to Let It Go and shut off her scheming, obsessive, always-vigilant side. She’s prone to (justified) paranoia and (less justified) violence. She does not react well to being startled, and has trouble recognizing just how scary and/or weird she can come off to regular people with regular lives in the mortal world. She will also readily go to extremes to achieve her goals. While she’s usually composed, she’s never really relaxed.

Self-destructive: Jude is kind of obsessive and firmly believes that there can be no gain without sacrifice, which means that she’ll often do things that are unhealthy in the interest of long-term gain. For example: she practices mithridatism, and is willing to destroy her most closest relationships in order to achieve a goal. She can be a bit messianic about this -- convincing herself that she is the only one who can make the difficult, ugly choices that must be made, and taking on the burden of those same choices. (Sometimes she is correct, and other times she’s just being arrogant.)

Stubborn: She will not infrequently do horrifically stupid things rather than take no for an answer. She's also sneaky and often feels that she knows best, which means that she can get herself into a whole lot of trouble before anyone ever notices. Sometimes her hardheadedness pays off manyfold; most of the time, she achieves her goal but at an unnecessarily high cost. The fact that she could've died many times over but hasn't only encourages her.

Always Keep In Mind:
- She’s from the 2010s, spent the first seven years of her life in regular human America, and has since been back plenty of times. Even so, her home and life is in Faerie, which means she’s a bit of a tourist in the regular world and wouldn’t be super familiar with all the intricacies of modern life. Thankfully, Diatu is much closer to what she’s used to, technology-wise!

- She tends to think her motives are nobler and less self-serving than they really are a lot of the time, and she’s kind of an unreliable narrator because of it.

Questions: Write an IC answer to the following questions:

What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy?
I don’t know. I’ve never been able to do magic before, so any-- all of it, I guess.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while?
I would go home. Distance makes it too easy to forget about the things you need to be doing, and there’s people who depend on me.

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react?
With caution.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force?
When you are assured a win, or if doing otherwise ensures a loss.

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be?
Probably to do more good than harm.

Special Considerations

Your Special Something: Secret knowledge, please!

Rank Your House Choice:
1. Gekronus Maius
2. Valhudor
3. Aer et Calculum

Powers:
In canon she couldn’t be magically charmed, glamoured, or hypnotized, and illusions did not work on her. Regular lies and mind-altering drugs still do, though!

Items:
- Faerie Fruit/Everapple: A sweet, golden fruit which makes humans incredibly suggestible
- A closet full of intricate Faerie-made dresses
